For Karl Hartey, philanthropy isn’t just about giving back—it’s about honoring a life that was taken too soon and ensuring that no family endures the same heartbreak.

Charlotte Hartey was bright, beautiful, and full of life. Her smile lit up the room, and her kindness touched everyone she met. At just 16, she had her whole future ahead of her—a future that was tragically cut short.
In 2009, Charlotte fell ill. She was misdiagnosed with swine flu when she actually had tonsillitis. The wrong treatment was given, complications set in, and she was transferred to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where she was supposed to be fast-tracked for urgent care.
But the doctor never read her notes.
The system failed her.
By the time they realized their mistake, it was too late.
On July 31, 2009, Charlotte passed away.
The grief was unbearable. But grief alone wasn’t enough.
Karl fought for justice, uncovering 18 points of failure in Charlotte’s medical care. He campaigned tirelessly, taking the case to court and representing his family in a two-day legal battle to expose the truth.
Nothing could bring Charlotte back.
But something could be done in her name.
That’s why the Charlotte Hartey Foundation was created.
